This article analyzes the campaign discourse of Ibrahim Boubacar Keita (IBK) for the elections held in the second half of 2013 in Mali, a country of West Africa bearing the name of one of the great empires of the Niger. Through oral tradition, its founder, Sundiata Keita, has left to posterity a legendary image that still nourishes debates and constitutes a central element of the collective imaginary in Mali. Drawing from the theory of argumentation in discourse, the study shows how IBK has adapted his speech to an audience in search of glory, building a picture of its present fragility and humiliation in contrast with the glorious past praised until this day by the traditional griots – thus constructing an image of his own person likely to meet the expectations of the audience.
