Jean Giraudoux et Combat avec l’image : l’autoportrait en scène
Abstract
Combat avec l’image, the only truly autobiographical text by Jean Giraudoux, written in 1940 – published by Éditions Émile-Paul in 1941 – on the basis of an ink drawing by Japanese painter Foujita representing a sleeping woman, provides the description of a portrait which, as the interrelation between the image and the individual-author develops, changes into a self-portrait. One of the most interesting points of this enigmatic text on the object-subject relationship lies in a theatrical staging through which Giraudoux changes descriptive prose into dramatic writing.
