Abstract

This paper examines the exophoric uses of hic; whether this demonstrative is used alone or with a noun, it refers to a thing which is present in the extralinguistic reality and which can be perceived by all the speakers and hearers: Philaenium estne haec quae intus exit? There are also uses where hic with a noun directly refers to a concept which takes place at the time of enunciation: quis taetrior hostis huic civitati? Hic always refers to the nunc of enunciation, in all its uses. This is the reason why this demonstrative refers to the time in which the speech occurs: nihil dicam hoc loco de me. Therefore I ask if it is necessary to distinguish the endophoric use from the exophoric use.
