Del desván a la carbonera: metamorfosis domésticas en el teatro áureo (Lope y Cervantes)
Abstract
This paper explores the symbolic meanings of a very specific and very central room, the attic, in two major plays of Spanish classical theater: a comedia, La dama boba, by Lope, and an entremés, La cueva de Salamanca, by Cervantes. The attic, a transgressive room in both plays, allows the frank and comical assertion of women’s right to love, the deception of old people —the father and the husband—, and the triumph of laughter in both conclusions.
