Objective: to analyze the use of simulation as a teaching-learning strategy in nursing. Methods: it is an integrative review of the literature, from scientific publications indexed in the online databases Lilacs, Pubmed and Portal of Nursing Journals (Rev. Enf), from 2010 to 2016. Following the search criteria, the sample consisted of 39 scientific articles, predominantly articles in the English language, most of them published in international journals, 59% (23) and 41% (16) published in national journals. Results: demonstrated that most of the studies used the simulation with high fidelity mannequins in the nursing teaching process for the development of knowledge and technical skills. The 39 articles studied were categorized into three main themes, knowledge and skills; patient safety and self-confidence; think critically and reflect the practice. Conclusions: based on the analysis of these studies, it was concluded that the simulation is an active methodology that contributes to nursing teaching-learning, as it dynamizes teaching through innovative strategies that make it possible to promote students' autonomy, cognitive competence and psychomotor skills. Simulation is an educational resource capable of promoting a new paradigm in relation to traditional teaching
