The article provides an overview of the main approaches to the study of computer mediated communication and online communication. It states the thesis about the reflection of changes in the parameters of communication and language preferences in these forms of Internet interactions, as well as social reality requirements in a new style of information processing. Specific features of computer mediated communication, which are gaining in stability and visibility, are said to be responding to new demands on new style of linguistic consciousness and linguistic competence of participants in electronic communication, who grew up in the age of engineering and digital technologies, and being aimed at its optimization by means of using a new, dialogical capabilities of modern computer environment. The author considers linguistic features, which are new forms of electronic communication: a language of electronic communication, the re-representation of the texts, written tradition of unprepared communication, clip-like consciousness and technological capabilities of its expression, an increased reflection of the metalanguage, the expression of the author's subjectivity, creolization, and intensive semiotics of language units. It is concluded that the scope of computer mediated communication study falls within the competence of linguists and will require significant attention to the changes that have been introduced by the new computer technologies into the life of our society and language.
