El toro y el héroe: variación del motivo en la narrativa de Juan Enríquez de Zúñiga / The Bull and the Hero: variation of the motif in the prose fiction of Juan Enríquez de Zúñiga

Abstract

Siguiendo el hilo argumentativo que relaciona el motivo del toro desmandado con la caracterización heroica del protagonista, este trabajo analiza la tradición literaria que parte de la imitación de las Etiópicas, la novela griega de Heliodoro, pasa (entre otros) por el Persiles cervantino y llega a la novela helenizante de Juan Enríquez de Zúñiga, Historia de las fortunas de Semprilis y Genorodano (1629), para evidenciar la desviación del héroe valeroso y esforzado a favor de un ideal más racional. Enríquez de Zúñiga parece revertir la función narrativa de la prueba de valor en la que el enfrentamiento taurino es sustituido por una erudita digresión en la que se quiere justificar, precisamente, la necesidad de prohibir la fiesta de los toros con lo que Genorodano representa un héroe dotado de otro tipo de virtudes, entre ellas, la erudición humanística.Palabras clave: Toro, héroe, Etiópicas, Persiles, Semprilis y Genorodano. Abstract: By following the argumentative thread which relates the motif of the devastating bull to the heroic characterization of the protagonist, the paper analyzes the literary tra­dition starting from the imitation of the Aethiopica, the Greek novel of Heliodorus, taking into consideration, among others, the Persiles of Cervantes and finishing at the byzantine novel, Historia de las fortunas de Semprilis y Genorodano (1629) by Juan Enríquez de Zúñiga, in order to show how the typology of a courageous hero shifts towards a system based on more rational ideals. Enríquez de Zúñiga seems to revert the narrative function of the test to prove courage: the challenge of confronting the bull is replaced by an erudite digression in order to justify, unexpectedly, the need to ban bullfighting; thus Genorodano represents other assets or virtues, displaying, e.g., humanistic erudition.Keywords: Bull, hero, Ethiopica, Persiles, Semprilis y Genorodano.
