Shanty towns: representation and exclusion

Abstract

This article presents a study carried in the town of Bom Jesus do Itabapoana, located in the nortwestern area of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Starting with the concept of “shanty towns”, we aimed at verifying whether residents in the location known as “Volta d’Areia” consider it to be a shanty town or just a poor neighborhood. Problems identified in the observation are discussed as well as how these residents are perceived and characterized by people living in other areas of the city.
