The article is the result of a research on field in the land of Odisha with the intent to study some local artistic expressions. The indian visual culture, naturally kaleidoscopic and composite, manifests itself in ways and meanings supported by a centennial and fascinating tradition. The village of Raghurajpur is one of the most explicative example of it. However, if we analyze some examples of local artifacts and we compare them with others evidently belonging to the ancient tradition, come to light some important and substantial differences between them. Mainly due to the appeal of the art market, we can register a substantial change on style, content and purpose of these local artifacts. Below I tried to analyze the importance of the contest in explaining the meaning of the object and the relevance of the relation between them, especially when we talk about art. I also reflected on the concept of collecting and how the global art market had changed the meaning of artifacts, usually exclusive prerogative of local traditions.
