The world is not only composed of Pancha Buddhas like earth, water, fire, air and sky. It is natural. The Tamil forefathers who knew this very well dealt with nature in the context of nature in Tholkaapiyam. Nature is ever changing and it is the permanent nature. Every man gets his needs from nature according to the environment in which he lives. When man became greedy, the environment began to suffer. However, there are plenty of records of people living in the Sangam period living without any impact on the environment. Sangam literature speaks about society in harmony with nature. There are many records of people living with nature as life, feeling, relationships, food and life. From the king to the common people, they have protected nature and the environment. People of the Sangam period could live according to the land and natural environment they lived in. They divided the lands into Kurinji, Mullai, Marutham, Neithal and Palai, and they used the natural materials found there as raw materials and used them as their livelihood. They had great knowledge and awareness of the environment and considered the places where they lived as deities. In the land of Kurinji, the mountain, in the land of Neithal, the sea, in the land of Marutham, the agricultural land, and in the land of Mullai, the forest are the mountain forms. The ancient Tamil people lived in harmony with nature and protected the environment. This article decodes the messages about the environmental management of the people in Kurinji land.
