The quality of life of man is directly related to water, which is mainly used for direct ingestion, food preparation, personal hygiene and utensils. Generally the rural population does not benefit from basic sanitation, and therefore suffers from the lack of safe sources of water supply and the disposal of waste. The present work aimed to mapping the alternative sources for water employed in the rural community of Visconde do Rio Branco-MG and analyzes of the collected water samples in order to compare them with the maximum values allowed by legislation. Alternative sources 39 were identified in rural population of Visconde do Rio Branco, such as, semiartesian wells, mines and cisterns, from which 6 sources were selected for sampling. The results of the analyzes found contamination for total coliforms in all 6 collected points, thermotolerant coliforms in 1 of the points and values above the allowed concentration for total Iron in 3 points. For iron Total, two sources are mines located in alluvial lands, where it is common to find iron in the form of ferrous bicarbonate dissolved in water; the other contaminated source is a cistern which is coatings by ferrous iron.
