The morphometric peculiarities of the eyes with tractional macular edema after age-related cataract phacoemulsification

Abstract

ABSTRACT Purpose. To study the morphometric peculiarities of eyes with tractional macular edema after phacoemulsification of age-related cataract. Material and methods. There were examined 72 patients (72 eyes) with macular edema (ME) developed after phacoemulsification of age-related cataract. The control group included 72 eyes of 72 patients without ME after phacoemulsification for age-related cataract in the follow-up of 1.5-2 years. The measurement of the axial length and horizontal diameter of the eyeballs were made in all eyes using the ultrasound echo-biometry as well as the analysis of the initial thickness of the lens. Results. The postoperative ME more often (in 66% of cases) appeared in the eyes with a shorter axial length (less than 23.5mm). The most typical shape of the eyes with postoperative ME was a compressed ellipse (51%). The eyes with initially increased thickness of lens (more than 4.8mm) were in the majority of the observed eyes (60%). Conclusions. These points may become a base of the prognosis for a high risk of the ME appearance after phacoemulsification of age-related cataract and a planning of postoperative dynamic follow-up of such patients.
