The relationship between job stressors and fatigue in nurses: The role of organizational support as a Moderator

Background and aims: Previous studies have shown a positive relationship between job Stressors and fatigue. The aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship between job stressors and fatigue in nurses by emphasizing on the moderating effect of organizational support. Methods: This descriptive correlational study was conducted in 2016. Participants in the study were 125 nurses in Khoramabad city who were selected randomly. Instruments for data collection were Job Stress, Fatigue and Organizational Support questionnaires. A stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine which of the job Stressors could be used to predict Fatigue. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were used to examine the moderating role of organizational support. Results: The findings of the stepwise regression showed that only death and dying indexes (β=0.38, P<0.006) and relationship to patients and their families (β=0.24, P<0.001) among the stressors are able to predict fatigue in nurses. In addition, the results of moderation regression analysis confirmed the role of institutional support moderator (β=0.29, P<0.001) in these relationships. Conclusions: This study revealed that higher levels of organizational support would be associated with lower levels of Fatigue, and that lower levels of organizational support would be associated with higher levels of fatigue. So, organizational support has an important role about nurses’ job stressors and fatigue.
