Background in Management and political consciousness of undergraduate students
Abstract
This article aims to understand the background in Management and the construction of the political conscience of Management undergraduate students in PUC Minas, Betim Campus. The theoretical axes are based on Paulo Freire’s Critical Pedagogy and on the Analytical Model of Political Consciousness (Sandoval & Silva, 2016). This study was guided by the critical perspective, adopting qualitative research and a case study as a research strategy. Empirical data were collected through documentary research, non-participant observation, structured and qualitative interviews. Data were analyzed using Freire’s dialectical-dialogical approach. The results showed that, in Management background, there are small sparks related to Teaching. However, due to background reproduction, Teaching has overlapped Research and Extension, and there is a dissociation between Teaching, Research and Extension, reflecting on the sedimentation of students’ background perception. Regarding the configuration of political consciousness, there is a demobilization concerning Extension, Background Spaces and citizen participation in participatory public places. The study contributes by filling a gap in research on Critical Teaching in Management, since adopting Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy allows to understand the ethical-political character of the Management background, despite some people denying such politicality. Furthermore, the incorporation of the Analytical Model of Political Consciousness in the analysis shed light on students’ (de)mobilization.
