A diplomacia brasileira da Independência: primeiros obstáculos
Abstract
Historical essay, dealing with the first international questions confronted by Brazil at the beginning of the 19th century. Those problems were: (a) recognition of the new State by the main powers at the time; (b) the control of the Southern borderlands, the guerrilla war of the Uruguayan nationalists and the war against Buenos Aires over the future Uruguay; (c) the slave trade and the slavery, which was first dealt at the Vienna Congress (1815), but that would endure for three additional decades, until 1850 and beyond. As the first question was settled through diplomatic negotiations, the second required Britain meddling for a solution; as for the third one, it projected a structural and negative lasting effect over the Brazilian society for the whole 19th century.
