Environmental conditions dictate differential evolution of vancomycin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus
Abstract
Henrique Machado et al. describe mutational mechanisms associated with MRSA vancomycin resistance in Staphylococcus aureus using adaptive laboratory evolution experiments focused on tolerance. Their results reveal environment-dependent mutational strategies to vancomycin tolerization and the impact of mutations in regulatory genes, providing insight into the development of antibiotic resistance under multiple conditions.
