Hypochondriasis: Psychiatric Sequelae of Coronavirus Disease 2019
Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused devastation in multiple facets globally including psychological repercussions. There is increasing evidence of rise in reports of fears of contracting the virus. Just like in any other pandemic, fears associated with developing COVID infection spread over a spectrum from normal concerns to excessive preoccupations. Delineating fears that can be justified in the present scenario from disease entity such as hypochondriasis is challenging. We present a case with excessive fear of contracting coronavirus with repeated checking behaviors to confirm his COVID-positive status which was not amenable in reassurance. Detailed evaluation and identification of psychiatric illness ensure the implementation of appropriate interventions.
