The article explores the role of precedent utterances in modern Ukrainian-language and Russian-language fantasy. The precedent utterance as a variety of precedent phenomena is considered, as well as various approaches to the study and definition of precedent utterances in modern linguistics. The ratio of canonical and transformed phraseological units in the works of Dara Kornii and Max Fray is analyzed, a comparative analysis of precedent utterances in the Russian-language and Ukrainian-language fantasy is conducted, their role in creating a linguistic picture of the world of the modern reader is determined. Materials for research are proverbs and sayings, aphorisms and phraseological units. The researcher comes to the conclusion that Dara Cornii more often uses untransformed utterances in their canonical form, only occasionally unfolding the hidden meaning of the established expressions, and Max Fray, using also canonical utterances, often turns to language game, cliche break, transformation, contamination and other ways of word formation . So Dara Kornii creates a text in which winged expressions perform a figurative and symbolic role, and Max Fray approaches the postmodern game with the text, expanding the interpretative possibilities and horizon of the reader's perception of the text. A conclusion is made about the orientation of modern fantasy to an intelligent reader who is able to identify and interpret intertext and precedent utterances.
