Abstract

Read online

Generalisations in narrative texts typically do not or not exclusively serve to devise the narrated world, but provide information about the narrative instance, the meaning of what is told or the real world. The paper contributes to the linguistic-literary description of generalisations, develops a tagset for their identification and classification, and presents the results of their collaborative annotation in a diachronic corpus (1616–1930). Finally, the paper presents a rule-based and a statistical tagger for the automatic recognition of generalisations that allow users to access a variety of examples of the phenomenon and can be used in the analysis of the functions of generalisations and the associated narratological phenomena.
