Purpose. To analyze the development and implementation of an alternative educational route for schoolchildren and their families, namely, the transition to an online school in high school. Methodology. The study used a biographical method: the collection of autobiographical writings about the educational path and the educational experience gained in online schools. An additional empirical approach is e-mail interviewing. Results. Eight groups of reasons for choosing to study in online schools in high school have been identified. The most significant motives are dissatisfaction with the quality of teaching and low academic performance in the previous school, personalization of the educational program. Among other reasons, the preference for the online learning format is preparation for state exams and university admission, security, health problems, relocation. The decision to change the student's educational route is made by the family, and the parents have previously changed the child's school. High school students in online schools show an increased interest in technical education and obtaining technical professions. The cognitive boundaries of the collection of biographical works are determined by the peculiarities of reconstructing educational biographies. The authors of the texts exaggerate independence in planning and implementing the educational route, including the transition to online learning. Biographical writings underestimate the role of the family in making and implementing educational decisions. The problem is overcome by additional interviewing of the authors of the texts. Practical implications. The results of the study can be applied in social policy in the fields of education and the labor market. And also in the training of students and postgraduates of sociological specialties.
