Ernesto Livorni’s T.S. Eliot, Eugenio Montale e la modernità dantesca (Florence 2020) is a detailed and informative comparative study on T.S. Eliot’s and Eugenio Montale’s poetry and poetics, on their most representative texts (poetry and literary criticism), on their aesthetic theories as formulated in their critical essays and reviews. It consists of a thorough survey of scholarly contributions throughout the years, of the two poets’ reviews and critical essays, Montale’s translations of some of Eliot’s poems, and common motives, themes, and characteristics of their poetry. The Italian academic living in the USA frames the theme of his in-depth analysis in the light of Dante Alighieri’s poetry, its perennial validity, as the subtitle: “e la modernità dantesca” clearly suggests.
