Discussions about sustainable development gained international recognition in recent decades. Education is indispensable for achieving sustainable development and higher education institutions play an important role in the training of professionals more sensitive to the issue. In this context the present research is to analyze how the Brazilian Federal Higher Education Institutions address the issue of sustainability in their actions. Therefore the methodology of exploratory and qualitative research was divided into 4 stages: analysis of sustainable logistics management plans, appointment of research and extension projects related to sustainability, check incentives for them and the relationship between the projects and the sustainable logistics management plan. The results showed that the studied higher education institutions have joined more sustainable management in recent years, and stands a compiled sustainable practices that can be adapted by other institutions. The results also show that the relationship between research sectors / extension with the university management is not a common practice, which points to the need for greater integration between sectors to promote the theme of sustainability.
