Abstract
This introductory text explores the relation between didactic or teaching Devices and Situations. It defines the Device as the result of a priori engineering, a mix of physical or semiotic objects organized to achieve an explicit goal, and the Situation as what is lived here and now by the protagonists of the educational relation. It then introduces the various contributions in this volume and opens the discussion with their authors.
