The Folha de S. Paulo’s memories during the military regime in Brazil: the process of construction of an identity on the basis of its remembrances and forgetfulnesses
Abstract
Wich memories the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo constructed and propagated during the military regime in Brazil? How these memories were remembered through the years, moving in parallel as an attempt to legitimate its history towards those years? This paper aims to problematize these questions for better comprehend how the newspaper made use of some memorial discourses – in its special anniversary editions, in productions and specific analysis about the topic – to legitimate the construction of an own narrative towards the period, which seeked to ensure support for itself in a particular present. Based on its remembrances and forgetfulnesses, on a selective use of the memory, the company consolidated its own identity, evidencing that our uses of the past are often veiled actions, susceptibles to confrontments and negotiations.
