Real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation has recently become convenient method in both research and industrial product development. The simulators used in HIL simulation includes hardware platforms that enables a real-time simulation. The choice of suitable platform is important in terms of providing modeling flexibility and mimicking real-time behavior with higher accuracy. In this study, HIL structures used in real-time simulation of electric drive systems are presented, hardware-assisted real-time simulators are comparatively assessed, and suitable platforms are suggested with respect to the applications of electric drive systems. In the case study, a real-time simulation of vector controlled permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drive system is performed on a hybrid parallel hardware platform with an Intel core at 3.0 GHz and a field programmable gate array (FPGA), and the issues associated with the realtime simulation are discussed. It is shown that the real-time HIL simulation of a vector controlled PMSM drive can be realized on a multi-core and FPGA based hybrid platform. In line with the results, suitable real-time HIL simulation platforms are suggested for the control systems with more computationally intensive and higher switching frequency components.
