With the rise of the worldwide wave of environmental protection, the issue of trade and the environment has increasingly gained the keen attention of the international community, governments, and people of all countries. It has become one of the focal points in the international political, economic, and social fields. How to harmonize the relationship between trade and the environment has become an urgent task for the international community. Opening up to the outside world and environmental protection are the two basic national policies of China, which have created certain contradictions and conflicts while promoting each other, affecting the sustainable development of the economy. As a big trading country, China’s environmental pollution and ecological damage have become more and more prominent in the background of the growing trade scale. Therefore, harmonizing the relationship between China’s international trade and environmental protection is also an urgent task for the Chinese government. Based on this background, this paper analyzes the current situation of China’s international trade and environmental protection based on a systematic study of the relationship between international trade and environmental protection and identifies the root causes of the contradictions between China’s international trade and environmental protection. We then search for a set of practicable solutions to promote the balanced development of China’s international trade and environmental protection.
