AN ANALYSIS ON THE TYPES OF MEANING IN INDONESIAN SUBTITLE OF ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE MOVIE

Abstract

Types of meaning are part of translation that should be mastered by English learner, one of the media to learn about types of meaning in English is from movie’s subtitle, because from a movie, learner can directly understanding what is spoken by the actors through the subtitle. A movie that is produced for Indonesia, they provide Indonesian subtitle. Based on that phenomenon, the writer was interested to analysed the types of meaning in Indonesian Subtitle of Elizabeth: The golden Age Movie. The writer applied content of discourse analysis which analyses the types of meaning that is found in Indonesian Subtitle of Elizabeth: The Golden Age Movie. It presented four of data analysis procedures: sampling (choosing the relevant material), units of analysis (taking words, phrases, and sentences), categories and coding (coding every units of analysis and allocating to one or more categories), analysis and evaluation (indicating to categories on the types of meaning and explaining).The result showed that all of the types of meaning in Indonesian subtitle of Elizabeth: The Golden Age are found. Those types are lexical meaning (14), grammatical meaning (245), textual meaning (33), contextual meaning (26), socio-cultural meaning (7). The most dominant types of meaning is grammatical meaning.
