COORDINATION IN AGROINDUSTRIAL SYSTEMS: A STUDY IN THE SOY PRODUCTION CHAIN IN THE NORTHWEST OF PARANÁ ACCORDING TO THE TRANSACTION COSTS ECONOMICS
Abstract
the objective of this study was to understand how the governance structure adopted between soy producers and a soybean purchasing company is organized in the northwest region of the state of Paraná, considering the economic importance of the Brazilian agribusiness and the relevance of the soybean crop to this result,. Based on the assumptions of the NEI (New Institutional Economics), in particular, the TCE (Transaction Costs Economics), this qualitative research involved the field research, through interviews and questionnaires, applied respectively to a soybean purchasing company and farmers who grow soy. As results, we observed in the transactions high asset specificity, high uncertainty and recurrent frequency. Despite this, it has been found that transactions are organized basically by a hybrid form. It is concluded that the hybrid structures observed differ from those proposed by TCE, since it involves a high specificity of assets and there is no guarantee of frequency, control and mitigation of the risks common to such a governance structure, thus failing to avoid market and climatic uncertainties, as well as the possibility of opportunistic behavior on the part of agents who have the specific investments.
