In this year the Slovak Museum of Nature Protection and Speleology, the all – Slovak specialised museum – commemorates the 90th anniversary of its establishment. It originated in 1930 under the name of the Slovak Karst Museum as a confederate museum managed by the curatorium in Liptovský Mikuláš, where the Museum has since resided. Its speleological orientation was extended to the protection of living nature in the 1980’s and the Museum got its current name in1990, ranked under the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic. Since 1999 it has been under the authority of the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic. The Museum administers a collection fund of natural and social science and technical items. The specialised archive at the Museum was established in 2005, and since then the Museum has also administered archival documents related to nature protection and speleology. It offers the following activities to the general public: making public collections and funds by comprehensive presentations in permanent and temporary study exhibitions, conducting research, publishing editorial titles and organising conferences, seminars and terrain excursions. It also offers educational programmes for the broader public including those for preschool children, seniors and marginalised groups. Finally, the Slovak Museum of Nature Protection and Speleology continues its work in international associations such as International Council of Museums – Comité International pour les Musées et Collections de Sciences et Techniques and Mitteleuropäische Union Technischer Museen.
