NDT & METROLOGY – Improving Efficiency in Aerospace Manufacturing utilizing the Multi-Modality Approach

Abstract

Historically, the approach in the aerospace industry has been that the CMM (also known as Metrology) and NDT departments are often independent organizational units, resulting in potential synergies often being recognized late or not at all. Combining NDT with Metrology is the main use case described in this paper, additionally also combinations of complementary NDT modalities like for instance Thermography - Dry and Wet Ultrasonic inspection and much more are possible. This paper is describing the use case of a Multi-Modality Project realized at a TIER 1 Supplier in Germany, but also giving an overview about other possible implementations. Dry inspection alternatives to the classic wet ultrasonic inspection area also mentioned in this paper.
