Abstract A new formulation of the direct speed control (DSC) method for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is proposed. The proposed DSC method employs a direct voltage control to synthesise the d and q axes stator voltage. In this method, no q‐axis current loop regulation is required. Thus, a new concept of the dynamic limiter (DL) is proposed to limit the undesirable current rises. The mathematical analyses, frequency and time domain simulations, and experimental test results highlight the simplicity and effectiveness of the proposed DSC method. Furthermore, sensorless operation of the method can make it a reliable alternative for low‐cost drive of PMSM.
