THE OSSETIANS AND RUSSIANS’ ETHNOPSYCHOLOGICAL PECULIARITIES OF COPING BEHAVIOR
Abstract
People face a lot of problems that must be quickly and efficiently overcome, using certain methods of coping with stress behavior (i.e. coping behavior). Despite the theoretical development of the problem of coping behavior, the question of culture influence on the formation of coping behavior and its manifestations is still relevant. The socio-psychological aspects of coping behavior in different ethnic groups of the Russian Federation are still unexplored. The article presents the results of an empirical study of the actual problem of ethno-psychological differences in coping behavior in social psychology, studied and described their differences among the representatives of the Russian and Ossetian ethnic groups. Such a study of the ethno-cultural aspect of coping behavior is relevant in connection with the fact that it contributes to a better understanding of the ways of integral functioning of the individual as a subject of activity in the context of interethnic interaction. Purpose. The main purpose of the study is to conduct a comparative analysis of cross-cultural features of coping behavior among representatives of Russian and Ossetian ethnic groups. Based on the purpose of the study, the following tasks are identified: theoretical study of the problems of cross-cultural studies in the works of domestic and foreign authors, empirical study of the influence of culture on coping behavior and comparative analysis of ethnic characteristics of Russian and Ossetian cultures in modern society. Method or methodology of the work. The complex of empirical methods includes methods of ethnopsychological diagnosis, using the technique of Coping behavior in stressful situations (developed by N. Endler and D. Parker, adapted by T.L. Kryukova), the test method Coping with stress COPE questionnaire (developed by K. Carver, M. Sheyer and J. Weintraub, adapted by T.O. Gordeeva, E.N. Osyn, E.A. Rasskazova, O.A. Sychev, V.Yu. Shevyakhova), as well as methods of The Big Five personality traits (developed by P. Costa and R. McCrae, adapted by A.B. Khromov). The results of the study were subjected to mathematical processing using a computer program SPSS 13.0., frequency and correlation analysis was used. Results. In the course of the study it is established that the representatives of the Russian ethnos are more likely to use problem-oriented coping, and the emotionally-oriented coping dominates among the representatives of the Ossetian ethnos. It is also revealed that the strategy of active coping is typical for the Russians in a stressful situation, while for the Ossetians are likely to resort to denial and behavioral withdrawal from the problem. It was certain significant differences between men and women in preferred coping strategies that were found. The scope of the results. The results can be used in the practice of psychological counseling of men and women experiencing difficult life situations, as well as contribute to the enrichment of scientific ideas on the impact of cross-cultural factors on the formation of coping behavior.
