Background and purpose: A wide range of studies have reported the role of troponin I as a predictor of mortality in infectious diseases. According to the various effect measures in different countries, the aim of present study to determine the relationship between serum troponin I level and mortality in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 infection in the east of Iran. Materials and methods: A case-control study was performed. Cases were 61 Covid-19 hospitalized patients (deceased) and 61 recovered patients (controls) who were matched with the corresponding case for age, sex, and admission date were examined. The association between Troponin I and hospital mortality among those patients was investigated using conditional logistic regression models. Results: The results of the study revealed that the risk of death in patients with high troponin levels at the beginning of hospitalization was 38% greater than that in individuals with normal troponin levels. However, this relationship was not statistically significant (Odds ratio=1.38, 95% confidence interval: 0.38, 5/0). Conclusion: The results of our study did not show any findings in favor of the predictive effect of troponin I on the mortality of patients with covid-19 infection. To obtain more accurate results, it is recommended to conduct further longitudinal studies with larger sample sizes and better control of confounding variables.
