AI AND LITERATURE, FRIENDS OR FOES? INVESTIGATING FL LEARNERS’ PERCEPTIONS ON AI AND LITERATURE EDUCATION AT ORAN2 UNIVERSITY (ALGERIA)
Abstract
Abstract : It is commonplace to note that winds of change continue to enormously hit the education industry. Indeed, the past few years have marked an outstanding growth in academic settings, more particularly with the advent of technological advancements that continue to constantly evolve. Artificial Intelligence (AI) expansion stands as a good case in point. This new fashion has revolutionized the face of learning and literature education is no exception. The latter, was once confined to text books, handouts, anthologies, onsite libraries or foundational knowledge traditionally offered by instructors in classroom halls, has now undergone a massive transformation. At a fingerprint and with the help of AI tools, students are exposed to a wealth of inexhaustible information from the comfort of their own homes and personal devices. An essential reality about literature as a subject is that it necessitates thorough readings and examinations so that to unveil deeper and underlying meanings. Previously, this process required learners to deeply engage with the learning material calling for interpretation and enhancing their critical thinking skills. Nevertheless, with the advent of AI tools which are growing more accessible, students have turned to AI for prompt assistance in their literature learning. The present academic research investigation seeks to investigate students’ perceptions and extent of AI use and reliance in their literature learning. In an attempt to meet the study objectives, a case study was conducted at Oran2 University (Algeria) in which a survey was administered to a sample of 50 foreign language students from divergent academic levels and departments studying at the same institution. The study will discuss the obtained results quantitatively and provide a set of suggestions to support the subject in hand. Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, AI Overreliance.
