Understanding the mechanisms governing hydrate formation and the flow characteristics of slurry in oil-water systems is crucial for developing effective hydrate risk management strategies and ensuring safe pipeline operations. This paper provides an overview of experimental devices used to study hydrate behavior in oil-water systems. It describes the structural composition, notable features, and application scenarios of both macroscopic and microscopic devices commonly employed in hydrate research. A comparative analysis of the advantages, disadvantages, and application results of each device is conducted with respect to hydrate nucleation, growth and decomposition rates, particle aggregation evaluation, rheological properties of slurry, and the development of quantitative models. The paper also considers the current research landscape to provide suggestions for future investigations of hydrates in oil-water systems. It anticipates that future studies will involve multi-scale approaches, coupling spectroscopic instruments with existing devices, and exploring the interfacial properties of water hydrate particles under high-pressure conditions. Furthermore, the paper envisions the development of a risk assessment method for hydrate blockage based on parameters such as hydrate growth rate, aggregation characteristics, and slurry mobility.
