Background and Objective: The increasing popularity of urban marathons has brought significant attention to their impact on sustainability. Despite contributing to numerous economic and social benefits, large-scale events represent a challenge from the perspective of sustainable development. This study aims to identify the communicated sustainability strategies used in organizing marathon running events in Europe and highlight the best practices associated with their implementation. Study Design/Materials and Methods: This research employs a literature review, coupled with case studies of sustainable initiatives from major European urban marathons. The quantitative content analysis and comparative analysis were conducted to examine the approaches taken by different marathon organizers. Results: The study reveals a variety of sustainable practices adopted by marathon organizers. All races highlight efforts related to recycling and waste reduction, and nearly all mention supporting local charities, using biodegradable materials, and promoting sustainable transport on their websites. Practical implications: The findings of this study underscore the importance of transparent communication and involvement of all stakeholders in enhancing the sustainability of large-scale sporting events. By identifying successful strategies, this research provides valuable insights for different event organizers, policymakers, and cities aiming to improve the environmental performance of urban marathons. Conclusion and summary: In conclusion, while significant progress has been made in integrating sustainable practices into urban marathons, considerable challenges remain. The study underscores the need for ongoing innovation and collaboration with stakeholders to further reduce the environmental impact of these events. The identified best practices offer a framework for other running events.
