Numerical Modelling and Analysis of Ballistic Performance of a Multilayer Para-Aramid Packet
Abstract
The selection of the appropriate number of layers of textile ballistic package, in order to meet the required safety criteria according to the accepted class of bullet-proofness, is implemented mainly on the basis of experimental research in the ballistic tunnel using a normalised ballistic substrate. The paper presents an approach to the selection of the appropriate number of layers of the package by modelling the phenomenon of ballistic impact into the package by using the finite element method, which allows us to limit the scope of experimental research. In the research, the ballistic impact of the 9 19 mm FMJ Parabellum bullet consisting of a lead core and jacket into the multi-layer ballistic package submitted from a fabric of para-aramid Twaron CT709 was analysed by using the finite element method. In the first stage of the research, for the selection of model parameters of the bullet, the deformation was analysed and designated by simulation and experiment during the impact at different speeds in the non-deformable plate. In the next step, for the selection and verification of material parameters of para-aramid fabric Twaron CT709, determined by simulation at an impact speed of the bullet of 366 m/s, the height of the cone deformation of textile package and the residual velocity of the bullet after puncturing the package. The results of the research were verified with the published experimental results. The last stage of simulation research included the evaluation of bullet-proof multi-layer packages composed of para-aramid fabric Twaron CT709 during the impact of 9 19 mm Parabellum bullet at different speeds. The bullet impact into the ballistic package consisting of 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 layers, at the speed range of 300-460 m/s, including bullet-proofness class II-A, II, and III-A was carried out.The material models 9 19 mm Parabellum bullet FMJ and para-aramid fabric Twaron CT709 were verified with the results published in literature. The simulation research of multilayer packets have shown that the bulletproofness depends on the number of layers of fabric and the velocity of bullet impact. It has been found that the bullet-proofness class II-A is obtained for the package composed of at least 10 layers of Twaron CT709. In the case of bullet-proofness class II, the package must be composed of at least 12 layers but in the case of bullet-proofness class III-A, of at least 16 layers. Such a configuration of layers, for particular classes of bullet-proofness, provides no-penetration packages and maximum perpendicular deformation of less than 44 mm.
