The meaning of the iconography called “Christ in the wine press” (Lagar) was enriched since its origins in the medieval European context until it crossed the Atlantic to be distributed in numerous museums and temples throughout all Latin America. In the process of encoding the image, and among the wide variety of versions that it had had untill then, a particular model of “Lagar” became the prevalent one. Being its spreading fostered by the use of Flemish engravings, which enjoyed great popularity at the time. This text links all the social, theological and artistic discourses that gave birth to such a powerful image.
