Ukrainian book collection of Library of Philology Faculty of Jagiellonian University: brief outline

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present the history of the book collection in the Ukrainian Library of the Jagiellonian University's Faculty of Philology, to analyze the methods of acquiring books, their distribution, characteristics of the book collection content with particular emphasis on the ones from the 19th and early 20th centuries and the inter war period. The methods of the retrospective, comparative and systematic analysis of the book collection are used. Scientific novelty: an attempt wasmade to fill the gaps in the research of Ukrainian book collections abroad, including the faculty library of the Jagiellonian University, which are still on the margins. Books containing gift inscriptions by M. Maksymowycz, P. Kulisz, B. Lepki, Ostap Makowa, and many other Ukrainian writers were examined. The most important conclusion of the article is to familiarize the reader with the history and content of the Ukrainian book collection at the Jagiellonian University. Based on the analysis of the book collection, it was possible to highlight the history of the Ukrainian book collection, which was closely related to the development of Slavic studies at the University. The conducted analysis of gift inscriptions and library stamps shows that the beginnings of the Ukrainian book collection date back to the 19th century, and that it aroused the interest of the professors of the Jagiellonian University, who committed the collection with their gifts. Dedication of Ukrainian writers to Professor of the Jagiellonian University J. Treciak also points to the relationship between Ukrainian and Polish literary circles at the beginning of the 20th century. The analysis of the book collection in the interwar period shows that, despite the difficult Ukrainian-Polish relations at that time, the employees of the Slavic Studies Department continued to supplement the book collection with new Ukrainian editions of various literary trends. A characteristic feature of the book collection of that period, its advantage is its completeness and complexity, as the literature of Galicia, Soviet Ukraine, and Ukrainian emigrants, as well as well-known and little-known books of Ukrainian writers were widely represented here. Many of these books were bannedin Soviet Ukraine for a long time.
