Fray Luis de León y San Agustín: la Oratio in Laudem Divi Augustini
Abstract
The present work considers the Oratio in laudem Divi Augustini of fray Luis de León, pronounced in the early 1560’ies, at the plenum of the university of Salamanca. What ought to be the panegyric of the bishop of Hippona becomes a meditation on a verse of the Ecclesiasticus (27, 12), which compares the wise to the sun and the fool to the moon. Having considered the tradition of this kind of sermons, whose origins may be traced in the 13th century, some doctrinal issues are taken in account in order to show how the Augustinian friar’s thought, as reflected in his De los Nombres de Cristo, was already formed twenty years earlier, in his Oratio.
