The article characterizes the documentary linguistics as a science, its object, subject, objectives, and the main issues. The author identifies basic terms “document” and “document text”, which are ambiguously used in the scientific literature, studies the content of the method of documental analysis to provide multidimensional and holistic description of the object. The main stages of studying document texts include identifying features of the document; the analysis of composition and content of the document structure; a study of the verbal organization of the text document; the interpretation of facts. It is noted that when describing the function of the document, it is important to consider its multi-functionality, the presence of common and specific features of their dynamics; in the analysis of compositional and meaningful structure to take into account the dependence of the document on its place in the documentation system, from the scope or level of its functioning, the specificity / scope of communication and the addressee of the document, the nature of the material carrier. The study of the verbal organization of the text document includes a broad range of linguistic methods and techniques of research: stylistic analysis, modeling the speech genre, the identification of semantic dominant of the text, “encyclopedic method”, method of logical and conceptual modeling, techniques of thematic groups, classifications, etc. The author gives examples of application of this method to achieve specific research goals.
