Pediatric Toxidrome Simulation Curriculum: Cholinergic Toxidrome
Abstract
Abstract This resource provides a comprehensive package to support instructors teaching pediatric cholinergic toxidrome. It includes background knowledge, presimulation preparation guidelines, and a simulation scenario, as well as tools to help evaluate team performance, guide debriefing, and elicit student feedback on instructor performance. Additionally, it has supplemental educational materials for instructors to provide to their students. This resource can be used in isolation or as a component of our pediatric toxidrome simulation curriculum to provide more comprehensive pediatric toxicology and resuscitation training. This curriculum is the most comprehensive pediatric cholinergic toxidrome curriculum we have seen. Other scenarios lack the detailed preparatory material, potential mistakes, and supplemental educational materials provided here. We have included extensive preparatory material to help the instructor prepare the environment and learners. The scenario itself is more complex, with more potential variations for clinical case progression than seen elsewhere. The debriefing tools, included to assist the instructor in his/her teaching, have been tailored specifically for this scenario, with advice on how to adapt them to different learners. This curriculum helps support standardization of the teaching process, assisting simulation instructors to maximize their impact. Supplemental learner handouts can reinforce the teaching points even after the session has finished. The inclusion of a learner feedback form supports the instructor's ongoing growth while helping faculty document their teaching efforts.
