Hate Speech on Media: The Case of Ankara Bombing
Abstract
The objective of this paper is to study the concept of Hate Speech on media and assess the phenomenon through the case of Ankara Bombing. Six newspapers released in Turkey between the dates 11th and 25th of September 2015 - five with the largest circulation which are Zaman, Hürriyet, Posta, Sözcü, Sabah, together with the only newspaper violating the broadcasting ban, Cumhuriyet, have been included in the study. The language used in news report and the headlines in the mentioned newspapers have been analyzed using Van Dijk’s discourse analysis method. As a result, it has been observed that the same event was reported differently in the newspapers investigated and a language, which encourages differences and legitimates hostility in both fascist and racist ways, was used. Finally, this paper aims to make an important contribution with its findings on hate speech in Turkey.
