Governor General of the Philippines from 1717 to 1719, FernandoManuel de Bustillo Bustamante y Rueda, was assassinated at the Palacio del Gobernador on October 1719 by a mob of religious fanatics (Blair & Robertson, 1906). Until today, exactly who killed Bustamante is contested, although Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo’s The Assassination of Governor Bustamante (undated) depicts the fall of Bustamante in the hands of Dominican priests.1 Did priests kill Bustamante? It is uncertain, although the power of magnificent art has perpetuated a devastating viewpoint.
