Abstract : This study is a theoretical reflection on the didactic implications of the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in English as a foreign language learning context with a view to developing learners' linguistic, cognitive and social skills. Based on multiple intelligences theory, it first analyses artificial intelligence capabilities in relation to those of individuals to see the innovations it actually brings in EFL context. On the ground of the results of this analysis, the issue of the potential replacement of the human language educator by AI is scrutinized. Then, using the precepts of cognitive offloading theory and connectivism theory, it examines the consequences of a non-didactic use of AI on the cognitive, social and linguistic skills of English language learners. Finally, on the ground of the theoretical framework it suggests a didactic treatment for a more constructive use of AI in EFL context.
