The article discusses the lexis of East Slavonic provenance, excerpted from 17th-century borderland diaries of Samuel and Bogusław Maskiewicz and Jan Antoni Chrapowicki. Vocabulary of Turco-Tartar origin was also included, in accordance with the principle (commonly accepted in linguistics) that a given foreign word, regardless of its original source, is a borrowing from the language from which the borrowing language adopted it directly. This does not mean that the testimonies and opinions relating to borrowed words are equated with the testimonies and opinions relating to their designates, since the origin of the designate and the direct source of the word are two different phenomena. The material was confronted with works on the language of borderland writers and with dictionaries of the Polish language, covering material from the Middle Ages to the first half of the 20th century.
