In order to introgress the low-gossypol-seed and high-gossypol-plant trait in the main cultivated cotton species, a BC2 plant issued from the HRS trispecific hybrid [(G. hirsutum x G. raimondiij 2x G. sturtianum/was backcrossed to G. hirsutum and self pollinated. Cytogenetics analysis ofBC3 end BC2S plants showed a significative improvement of chromosome pairing and pollen fertility compared to their parents. About one third of the BC3 hybrids presented an important reduction in their seed gossypol glands. These genotypes constitute very promising genetic stocks for the development of commercial cotton varieties with low gossypol content in the seeds and normal gossypol content in the rest of the aerial parts.
