In the second American presidential debate on October 11th, 2000, the first question that the journalist Jim Lehrer, the moderator, asked the Democratic candidate Al Gore and the Republican George W. Bush was: “One of you is about to be elected the leader of the singlemost powerful nation in the world economically, militarily, diplomatically, you name it. Have you formed any guiding principles for exercising this enormous power?” The two candidates agreed that the U.S. should act with humility and that America has a great responsibility in the world.
