Abstract The population ageing is a recent phenomenon with numerous and important social, economic and other consequences. In the developed countries the process has developed inmore advanced form with high and still rising percentage of the age group 65 and moreyears in the total population. This development is the main cause of the deep transformations of the socioeconomic characteristics of the modern society. The most important arethe challenges to public finances and intergenerational solidarity, especially those in thefields of public pensions, health care and long-term care. Serious reforms are needed forthe path of greater sustainability of these systems in EU as well as in Slovenia.
