The rising popularity of bariatric surgery over the past severalyears is attributable in part to the development of laparoscopicbariatric surgery. The laparoscopic approach to bariatric surgeryoffers a minimally invasive option that reduces the physiologicstress and provides clinical benefits, as compared with the openapproach. This review summarizes the impact of interventionallaparoscopy in the field of bariatric surgery, stressing the maindifferences between the conventional and laparoscopic approach, mainly stressing the attenuated stress response following theoperative trauma and all the related advantages, such as less painand faster recovery.
